Parks and Gardens
Granada is a city of lovely parks and gardens. There are four basic types: járdin real or royal garden; Carmen or villa; patio or courtyard; cueva or cave.
The járdin or royal includes the Alhambra and Generalife. Both have geometrically designed gardens with numerous fountains and pools surrounded by lovely flower beds. Fruit-bearing trees abound, and the flowers invade the nooks and corners with colour and aroma.
A Carmen is generally a private villa on a small plot of land. Interspersed, you usually find fountains and terraces at different levels, with greenery that is occasionally purely ornamental and at other times produces shade and tranquil retreats. Balconies are adorned and the courtyards entice the visitor to rest amidst their silence. The Cipreses and the Purificatión are two of the loveliest ones.
When the term patio or courtyard is used here, we are referring to the ones in a convent or a monastery. Although they may be small, they can be especially charming. Some have fruit trees bearing flowers and myriads of different plants. Two of the most famous ones are the courtyards of the Monastery of San Jerónimo and the Monastery of Santa Isabel La Real.
Last but not least, there are the cuevas or caves. Some of these humble, whitewashed dwellings are surrounded by eye-catching gardens maintained with great pride by their owners.

Food and Drink
Cuisine in Granada reveals definite Arab influences in many of its dishes, in the use of certain spices, and especially with regards to desserts. An ample supply of fresh garden vegetables makes it possible to create excellent dishes, where the main ingredients are vegetables. Lima beans, artichokes and eggplant are the basis for recipes, such as habas con jamón (lima beans with ham), cazuela de habas (lima bean casserole) or albornía (a mixture of vegetables, spices and olive oil).
Among the most famous dishes are papas a lo pobre, and the tortilla Sacromonte, an omelet with a mixture of vegetables.
Stews are a good example of popular cuisine; olla de San Antón is a hearty dish which mixes lima beans, pig´s ears or head, bacon and blood sausage; olla podrida is a stew of lamb, pork, veal, chicken, pigeon, sausage and ham with vegetables, such as cabbage, leeks turnips, carrots and artichokes, as well as prunes and dried apricots.
On the coast, numerous recipes with fish are common. Typical dishes are fritura de pescado (fish fry), boquerones adobados (fresh marinated anchovies), cazuela de pescado frito (fried fish casserole) and moraga de sardinas, sardines prepared with white wine, garlic, olive oil, parsley and lemon juice.

Alpujarreña cuisine, from the southern Andalusian mountain region, has special ways to prepare the calf, rabbit, partridge and game which abound in the area. Also from the Alpujarra are the recipes for trout, as the best rivers for trout fishing are between Trevélez and Bérchules. Also, not forgetting the delicious migas, a type of fried bread crumbs seasoned with garlic and paprika.

As to cold meats, Montefrío is noted for its chorizos and Soportújar for its longaniza (sausage). Cured hams from Trevélez are widely renowned.
Among the dishes of Moorish origin are lamb meatballs and lamb with pomegranate seeds.
Desserts : confected by nuns star among sweets from Granada: pastelón de perdiz (partridge pie) by the Encarnación nuns; la hoja (the leaf) from Jerónimas; and also sweetened pumpkin, apples with wild blackberries, chestnut soup, thick french toast with honey; and from Santa Fe, the piononos, delicate cream-filled cakes soaked in a light syrup.

Shopping
There is an important handicraft tradition in Granada which includes ceramics, wrought iron, cloth, leather, and musical instruments. Moorish influence can be found in many of them, such as marquetry, decorating of furniture and wooden objects with precious inlaid woods; metalworking, such as wrought iron or repoussé designs in copper; wrought iron lanterns, lamps, metal grating and grille work.
Glazed ceramic from Granada receives the name of Fajalauza from the place where the potters settled near the gateway of the same name in Alabaicín. Master guitar-makers of Granada have received international acclaim. The making of castanets has also become an important tradition. Leather craftsmen continue working with embossed or polychrome leathers to make decorative objects, purses, etc. In the Alcaicería, as well as on the street of Zacatín (near the Cathedral ), ceramics, copper, embossed leather, wrought iron and other souvenirs can be purchased. The Community Activities Centre (Centro de Actividades Comunitarias) of Albaicín also has handicrafts for sale.
NightlifeGranada boasts a very active nightlife, partially influenced by the large number of University students residing here. In the areas surrounding the streets of Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, Horno de Abad and Plaza de los Lobos, there are many bars and pubs. The Plaza Nueva and Paseo de los Tristes are the most lively spots during the summer months.
Fashions, Gifts and Antiques
The majority of fashionable clothing shops can be found in the vicinity of the Cathedral and in the areas surrounding Puerta Real, Carrera de la Virgen, Recogidas, Acera del Carro, and Pedro Antonio de Alarcón. Antique shops can be found on the Calle Elvira and the Cuestra de Gomérez.

Festivals and Celebrations

Holy week
This has been officially declared a" holiday of interest to the Tourist" and is one of Granada's grandest festivals, attracting more and more visitors each year with increasing displays of popular fervour. On Wednesday of Holy Week, there is a procession held called "Christ of the Gypsies" or "Christ of Sacromonte". Other processions of interest are: the Procession of Silence held at midnight on Thursday of Holy Week, departing from the Church of San Pedro on the Carrera del Darro, and Procession of Las Angustias on Saturday of Holy Week.

January 2nd is the Festival of the Reconquest of Granada by the Catholic monarchs.
May 3rd is the Festival of Crosses, a very popular celebration. Crosses made of flowers are placed in the streets, while courtyards of the houses are also adorned.
Between May and June, the Corpus Cristi Fair, the biggest festival in the city, is celebrated. Typical Andalusian dress is worn, horse-drawn carriages are used, and there is dancing at the stalls of the fair. Bullfights are also held.
The last Sunday in September is the Festival of the Virgen de las Angustias, patron saint of the city. Open-air dances, bullfights and processions are held.

Granada is a city made for strolling and daydreaming. Both the artistic splendour of it monuments, as well as the beauty of the water of its parks, fountains, and pools, are a delight to the eye. Its narrow streets contrast with spacious gardens. Religious during Holy Week and festive at the caves of Sacromonte, Granada never ceases to amaze. Everything that should be said about Granada can be summarized with the verse by Francisco A. de Icaza displayed at the Tower of La Polvorosa at the Alhambra.

Give him alms, woman, as there is no greater tribulation in life than being blind in Granada.
